Installation of MagiC 6.20
==========================

Andreas Kromke
4.8.2001

Supported systems:
Atari, Macintosh, Milan

Prerequisites: MagiC 6.10 for the same system.

1. General
----------

This version of MagiC is an incremental update of version 6.10. The
modifications are mainly internal, and are described in detail in the
document HISTORY.6_2.

Some files are present unencrypted and can directly replace the old
versions. This is not the case with the operating system kernel. The kernel
file is encrypted, and the 6.10 kernel file serves as the key.

Some manual work for the installation is unfortunately necessary. The
method is listed in the following, described separately for each system. We
tested the methodology with MAGXDESK:

2. Installation for Atari
-------------------------

Copy the folder MAGIC.620 onto your hard drive.

Open in MAGIC.620 the folder KRYPT\Atari.

Drag the file MAGIC.RAM from your original installation disk (not your
personal, installed version!) onto the batch file Decrypt.btp. This file
generates a 6.20 kernel under the name magic.ram.620 in the same folder in
which the btp file is situated.

Make a copy of your 6.10 installation disk (on your hard drive if
necessary), and replace the old MAGIC.RAM with the new (rename the copy
MAGIC.RAM).

Replace all the other files on your copy of the installation disk with
their corresponding counterparts from 6.20.

You now have a complete 6.20 installation disk. Execute the installation
from this disk.

3. Installation for Milan
-------------------------

Copy the folder MAGIC.620 onto your hard drive.

Open in MAGIC.620 the folder KRYPT\Milan.

Drag the file MAGIC.RAM from your original installation disk (not your
personal, installed version!) onto the batch file Decrypt.btp. This file
generates a 6.20 kernel under the name mmilan.ram.620 in the same folder in
which the btp file is situated.

4. Installation for Macintosh
-----------------------------

The installation of MagicMac functions completely differently than on the
Atari, therefore the MagiC updating must also be executed differently.

First obtain ResEdit from Apple (or if necessary another resource editor).
The program is free.

Copy with the Finder the folder MAGIC.620 to a place on your hard drive
that you can reach under MagicMac, for example MAGIC_C.

Save a copy of your old MagiC 6.10 kernel, using the Finder to rename the
copy "MagicMac OS" to MAG_MAC.OS.610.

Copy with the Finder the freshly renamed file MAG_MAC.OS.610 into the
folder MAGIC.620 after KRYPT\Mac.

Start MagicMac (6.10), and open the folder KRYPT\Mac in the folder
MAGIC.620.

Drag the newly copied file MAG_MAC.OS.610 onto the batch file Decrypt.btp.
This file generates a 6.20 kernel with the name MAG_MAC.OS.620 in the same
folder in which the btp file is situated.

Terminate MagicMac again, and you continue to work with the Finder.

Open MAG_MAC.OS.610 and MAG_MAC.OS.620 with ResEdit, and copy the "resource
fork" from the first to the second file. Save the modified file
MAG_MAC.OS.620 again.

Copy the newly generated file MAG_MAC.OS.620 into your MagicMac folder,
i.e. where "MagiCMac OS" must lie. Now rename this file "MagicMac OS" (this
whole performance is necessary because MCMD does not recognise blanks in
filenames. "Professionals" can use Mupfel and construct an appropriate
Decrypt.sh file).

Replace all the other files of the MagiC version 6.10 on your hard drive
with their corresponding counterparts from 6.20.

The update is now finished.
