An urgent plea and warning:
--------------------------------------------------------------------
! By using CoNnect you automatically recognise that I (the program !
! author) will take any changes to CONNECT.PRG to be an attempt to !
! patch the program. I regard this as a breach of copyright (under !
! 242 of the German criminal code)! !
! !
! Even the release as Public Domain means only that there are no !
! registration fees any more and that keys can be generated freely.!
! The copyright for the program as well as the manual remains !
! the authors'. Alteration, including the make-up of the archives, !
! is not permitted! !
! -----------------------------------------------------------------!

(It can be done in this text, which has been updated and extended at
various times. I won't make any special corrections in it any more.
Just use the parts that you prefer. :->)

Warning:
========

Read through this section very carefully before you install the new
CoNnect version.

CoNnect95 now runs with MagicPC under Windows95. That is the new
operating system from Greenmond. Possible errors that arise in the use
of CoNnect95 can be attributed with 99.98% probability to problems with
the OLEOLE integration.

And something else: The archive CONNECT.LZH that is packed into
CONN95.LZH/CONN97xx.LZH contains, besides the actual program files also
the file CONNECT.CTL, a (presumable already again obsolete) telephone
directory with Maus phone numbers. Please remember to save your old
personal telephone numbers (if any). But you also continue to use your
old CONNECT.CTL.

PUBLIC DOMAIN:
==============

Since the 21st July 1998 CoNnect is Public Domain, i.e. it can be used
without charge and registration is no longer necessary, but also the
manual is NO LONGER AVAILABLE from the author. This removal of restrictions
applies to the last public release, CoNnect 95, the English resource file
for version 95, the German and English beta-version CoNnect 97b as well as
(!!) the files and information for key generation. More about this below.

We give thanks for the interest aroused by the whole CoNnect project,
the widespread support and enthusiastic hymns of praise, and naturally
for the loads of money! :-)

We hope that particularly those who bought and paid for CoNnect 'at the
last moment' are not too put out, but we took this decision rather quickly.
Look at it this way: The software is worth the money anyway and you got
the manual as well for it.

UPDATER:
========

CoNnect 95 and lower:
---------------------

From version 95 Connect uses a new key system in which it is no longer
necessary to specify the operating system (but that is not the only
alteration). You obtain the new key in following way:

a) Start connect.prg, open the Registration dialogue, type in your
name (and address, though this can be omitted) and press RETURN.
CoNnect will assign you a User-ID at top right of the 'Key' section.
   Write this down carefully.

b) Start mkpass.tos that is included in the package, either by using
'Run a program' or after quitting back to the desktop. It expects two
input lines terminated with RETURN, with the names you used in the
Registration dialogue and the ID that CoNnect has assigned you. Case
matters so make sure you type in everything exactly as in the
Registration dialogue! mkpass.tos will then output the required key,
which you must note down again.
However, unless you have arranged for TOS programs to output to a
window rather than directly to the screen, you will probably have to
install hold_it.prg or something similar in your AUTO folder and hold
down ALT while pressing RETURN after inputting the second line, because
otherwise you won't have time to read your key!

c) In case that you have WWW-access, you can use the URL

         http://www.cable.de/~philipp/personalien/connect.html

to call up a form for interactive online key-generation (in the lower
area). Enter the data in the corresponding fields and you will get the
   key returned as output.

d) Open CoNect's Registration dialogue again, and if you have quit CoNnect
to run mkpass.tos type in your name and address as before, and then the
number that mkpass.tos returned into the field below the User-ID. Click
OK and if you have done everything correctly, CoNnect will inform you
that the registration has been successful and that you should now Save
options. If you have made an error, it will tell you that registration
was not successful and you will have to try again.

Use a new directory for the installation of CoNnect, i.e. do not overwrite
an existing installation. In particular you must not mix up the setup,
options and NUM files in the different versions.

CoNnect 97:
-----------

Here the key checking is already deactivated. Just enter anything you like
into the key field of the registration dialogue. After this CoNnect 97
becomes a fully unrestricted version.

Note once again: CoNnect 97 is really a Beta version and at the same time
the last. Errors may appear and these will *not* be corrected any more.
Further development has been suspended.

Introduction
============

About CoNnect
-------------

CoNnect is a resolution-independent terminal program for Atari ST/STE/TT
computers that offers full and unrestricted VT 100/220/ TEK4014/ and
VT102/ANSI-terminal standards. With CoNnect you can run several data
exchange/terminal sessions simultaneously in various independent windows,
for instance on a TT a modem on each of the four serial ports and via the
MIDI port too! CoNnect runs under Overscan, with the TT large-screen
monitor and has also been tested successfully on the Matrix graphics card.
To increase speed, CoNnect uses its own I/O-routines. Connect however does
not run on any and every platform that claims to be 70% Atari-compatible.

CoNnect was programmed very carefully and subjected to bug-hunting by a
whole army of beta testers who 'slaughtered' it as extensively as possible.
But naturally no liability can be accepted for any consequences arising
from use or non-use of CoNnect.

After all, we are dealing with Shareware!
-----------------------------------------

(The following section is included for historical reasons. You can now
produce the full version with the instructions given above.)

CoNnect is a shareware program. As everyone knows, this means that you can
copy the demo version of CoNnect freely as long as all original files are
passed on complete and unchanged. Distribution of the unregistered demo
version via PD-distributors, mail boxes/BBSs, disk swaps and the usual
channels is explicitly desired, provided that no burdens (financial,
physical or any other kind) are imposed on the author team (program/manual).

A small limitation of the demo version is that fully automatic batch
operation of CoNnect is not possible, as when the demo version starts up
the Info-window always appears as the top window and this has to be closed
with a mouse-click before starting the batch; but after this the batch
will run without problems. Also, when quitting the program, CoNnect can
decide to bring up a message that the program prefers registered users.

Otherwise the demo version has no restrictions for the first 30 hours of
running time apart from the fact that the automatic telephone answering
machine is not automatic!

You have practically a full version available. But during this time you
should decide to register, as the user-friendliness of the terminal program
rapidly falls off after 30 hours of using the demo.

After this the following limitations appear:

a) The telephone answering machine only picks up a call manually (i.e.
after a mouse click) which really defeats the point of a telephone
answering machine!

b) The options and the setup can no longer be saved; the default CoNnect
configuration will always be loaded instead. Changes have to be made
anew for each start.

An urgent plea and warning:
--------------------------------------------------------------------
! By using CoNnect you automatically recognise that I (the program !
! author) will take any changes to CONNECT.PRG to be an attempt to !
! patch the program. I regard this as a breach of copyright (under !

! !
! Even the release as Public Domain means only that there are no !
! registration fees any more and that keys can be generated freely.!
! The copyright for the program as well as the manual remains !
! the authors'. Alteration, including the make-up of the archives, !
! is not permitted! !
! -----------------------------------------------------------------!

At the same time I wish to emphasise that any criticism, praise, and
suggestions for the structure and appearance of the manual should be
directed to the manual's author: Philipp Oelwein,
                                  philipp.oelwein@kabel.de

So --- enough of the introduction. Start up CoNnect now and play around
with it. Should some things not be clear to you at times, just press the
HELP key. CoNnect will then do its best to be helpful to you.
